free knitting pattern for a rustic kitchen set

After delicate Mother’s Day shawl and soft Shawl of Solitaire, I wanted to knit something rough and rustic. There is a luxury in simplicity and this time I didn’t want anything too complex.

I had 100 m of jute twine lying around – waiting for me. Wishing for my attention. Whispering, how it wanted to BE something.

As soon as I touched it, I knew what it will be. Kitchen scrubby. Or washcloth.

Today’s project is simple. Cast on as many stitches you’ll need and knit as many rows as you like. Just eyeball it. I wrote down stitch and row count for you, in case you want to follow exact instructions.

You’ll need:

  • twine
  • knitting needles
  • crochet hook or sewing needle

READ BEFORE STARTING!

  • Do not, I repeat, DO NOT work with jute twine on your bed or on your sofa. It makes a total mess. I knitted on my bed and it produced so much fluff and particles that I had to make cleaning spree in the middle of the night.
  • If you happen to have dust allergy then you should know that it gets worse.
  • Your skin will be sore by the time you’re finished. Twine is kind of rough (it will get soft as you wash it).

Now – if I haven’t scared you away then here is the dish scrubber and washcloth knitting tutorial.

I made a soap bag out of jute. I use it after I’ve been mucking about in my garden, it’s amazing how well it cleans mud/dirt from my hands and fingernails. I hung it from an outdoor faucet.
