free knitting pattern for tiny knitted christmas stockings

Yes, I really am knitting for Christmas. And why? Because last year I started too late.

I’m fixing my mistake now.

I’ve been drooling over those tiny Christmas stockings you can use on your table setting for a few years now, and I never realized – I could knit it myself you know…

Well, I did knit it, I was quite happy with it and now am sharing the pattern with you.


Easy knitting pattern for tiny cabled Christmas stockings to use on your Christmas table setting
You’ll need:
  • size 4 mm / US 7 double pointed needles or circular needles
  • 15 g (30 yards) of white 10 ply / aran / worsted yarn – I used DROPS Nepal
  • 36 g (60 yards) of red 10 ply / aran / worsted yarn
  • cable needle
Abbreviations:
  • dpns – double pointed needles;
  • sts – stitches;
  • cn – cable needle;
  • k – knit;
  • p – purl;
  • 4/4 CL – put 4 sts on cn and hold in front, knit next 4 sts from LH needle, and then knit 4 sts from cn;
  • ssk – slip, slip, knit together through back loops;
  • k2tog – knit 2 together;

Cast on and ribbing:

Cast on 44 stitches with white and divide your stitches between 4 dpns (if you use them).

Work 12 rounds in 2:2 ribbing (knit 2, purl 2).

Change to red.


Work the pattern:
  1. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;
  2. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;
  3. *k2, p5, 4/4 CL, p5, k2* 2 times;
  4. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;
  5. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;
  6. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;
  7. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;
  8. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;

Work this pattern 4 times and start with the heel.


Heel flap:
  1. k2, p3, turn;
  2. Sl st, k2, p4, k3, turn;
  3. Sl st, p2, k4, p3, turn;
  4. Sl st, k2, p4, k3, turn;
  5. Sl st, p2, k4, p3, turn;
  6. Sl st, k2, p4, k3, turn;
Turning the heel:
  1. Sl st, p2, k3, ssk, turn;
  2. Sl st, p2, p2tog, turn;
  3. Sl st, k2, ssk, turn;
  4. Sl st, p2, p2tog, turn;
  5. Sl st, k2, ssk, turn;
  6. Sl st, p2, p2tog, turn;

Foot:

Sl st, k3, pick up 4 stitches, p2, k8, p5, k4, p5, k8, p2, pick up 4 stitches, k2 (first two stitches from beginning of this round).

  1. k2, p6, k8, p5, k4, p5, k8, p6, k2;
  2. k2, p2, p2tog, p2, 4/4 CL, p5, k4, p5, 4/4 CL, p2, p2tog, p2, k2;
  3. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;
  4. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;
  5. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;
  6. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;
  7. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;
  8. *k2, p5, k8, p5, k2* 2 times;

Toe decreases

Start with decreases.

  • *k1, ssk, p1, (k2tog, ssk) twice, p1, k2tog, k1* 2 times;
  • *k1, sk2p, k2, sk2p, k1* 2 times;
  • *sk2p* 4 times;

Cut yarn and finish it off.
