free knitting pattern for easy lace scarf

Last week I gave you a pattern for the Wave stitch swatch, and that looked like this:

Wave stitch knitting pattern

I’m sure you figured out by now that it was a rehearsal knitting for this scarf.

The Wavy Scarf is an easy knit and grows quite fast. Think “knitted Christmas gifts”. Wink wink…

Also, I think this pattern is just perfect for a beginner lace knitter.

Suitable for beginning lace knitters, the Wavy scarf is much easier to knit than you might think. While this Estonian lace pattern might feel complicated you will be surprised.

Measurements:

Blocked scarf measures:

  • 165 cm / 65 inches in length;
  • 19 cm / 7.5 inches in width;

You’ll need:

  • long needles in size 3 or 3,5 mm / US 2,5 or US 3
    (you can also use circulars if it’s easier for your hands);
  • light fingering or sock yarn about 100 grams / 492 yards – I used Alize Cashmira Fine

Abbreviations:

  • k – knit
  • p – purl
  • YO – yarn over
  • ssk – slip, slip, knit slipped stitches together
  • k2tog – knit 2 together
  • sk2p – slip 1 st, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over

      I think “to knit” lists are meant to be endless 🙂

          ophs so sorry. The sign I tried to use did not come out correctly. So here is my old faithful 🙂

  2. Ms Sue

    I love this pattern. It looks light and airy, but could also be warm and cosy done in the right yarn. I live where it doesn’t get so cold you have to stay wrapped up, but this is attractive and would make a nice addition to my scarves.

  3. Nilda

    Beautiful scarf and gorgeous color! Thanks so much for sharing the pattern.

  4. Marny CA

    You are wonderful – thank you very much! I love the pattern and now the scarf. I’m thinking a future baby blanket, too.

  5. Norma

    Beautiful scarf, thank you so much

  6. Pam

    I think the pattern looks more difficult than for beginners so I’m elated you think opposite of I!!!!! It is a lovely pattern and could be used as a pattern for many items. Thanks a bunch! PT

  7. Tikva Schmid

    I love the pattern. How can I make it wider

    1. PatternDuchess

      You can do this scarf wider by making more pattern repeats.

  8. Linda

    I am really enjoying knitting this pattern! Thank you for clear instructions. I’m adding two repeats for a bit wider scarf for my sister, and as this is only my second small lace project (the other was socks), I’m hoping it will turn out as lovely as yours!

    1. PatternDuchess

      Thank you, Linda! I’m sure your scarf will be even more beautiful than mine 🙂

  9. Gisele Paquette

    Can I have your permission to sell the knitted product?

    1. PatternDuchess

      Yes Gisele, absolutely 🙂 Good luck!

  10. Sandy

    I can’t make this work. First row where it says (YO,ssk) twice.
    I’ve done it twice more marketing this 3 YO,SSK and I’ve tried it doing only once more
    Either way I can never end the row with k5. It’s always not enough sts left
    Help

  11. Sandy

    Just looked over the diagram above and it doesn’t match the written instruction

    1. PatternDuchess

      I checked and it looks to me it matches – are we talking about row 1? Let’s try to write this out: knit 5 sts, yarn over, ssk (single decrease (1 st from 2 sts)), yarn over, ssk, yarn over, sk2p (double decrease (1 at from 3 sts)), yarn over, k2tog (single decrease (1 st from 2 sts)), yarn over, knit 1, – repeat everything in bold, and end with knit 5.

      Does that help?
