How to knit (fingerless) mittens

Finishing strong – thumbs.

how to knit thumb for mittensLet’s start with the basics, so you can get an overview of how things go on…

First, we need stitches. Put the thumb stitches from stitch holder onto two needles (something like on this picture on left) and take your third needle.

Remember how you put those thumb stitches on hold and cast on some stitches when you finished the thumb gusset? Well, pick up these cast on stitches + 1 more on both sides.

mitten thumb knitting tutorialTake yarn and knit one round, starting from picked up stitches (twisting as you knit).

Now, before you move on with the next round, pick up one more stitch (in between the needles), put it on your left needle. Knit first two stitches and slip first over the second. Knit to the end of round.

1st needle: Knit 1 stitch, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; knit other 2 needles.

For fingerless mittens – knit until you have a half an inch (about 1 cm) left from fingertip. End with 5 rounds of 1:1 ribbing (knit 1, purl 1) and cast off. (Or use any other pattern)

For usual mittens – knit until you have half an inch (about 1 cm) from fingertip and start with the decreases.
Divide your stitches between three needles so that they are even (more or less).

Step 1: Knit to the middle of needle and knit 2 stitches together. Repeat with the other two needles.
Step 2: Knit to last 2 stitches and knit these together. Repeat with other two needles.
Step 3: Knit first 2 stitches together and knit to the end of the needle. Repeat with other two needles.

Repeat steps 1 to 3 until you have 5 or 6 stitches left (total).

Cut yarn, take your sewing needle, bring yarn through the stitches, pull tight, bring the needle to the wrong side of work (through this little hole you have on top of the mitten thumb) and sew. Hide all yarn ends.
