cable knit baby hat free pattern

Update! According to coments – sizing is little too big, so adabt for your needs (make a swatch and measure) – maybe I had kids with big head? 🙂

I promised you something romantic for today.

And here it is. Cables. Little bit of a challenge though. OK, lot of challenge, but you’re up for it. Right?

Baby hat is the most perfect project to practice your cable work. As we all know, cabled scarf can take an eternity to knit.

Not with baby hat – you can make it a weekend project and give it to charity (for instance). Or your favorite baby (as I like to say).

Measurements (actually this hat is more stretchier but these are the average measurements) :

  • 0 – 3 months: circumference 34 – 36 cm (13 – 14 inches) and depth 16 cm (6 inches);
  • 3 – 6 months: circumference 38 – 40 cm (14 – 16 inches) and depth 18 cm (7 inches);

Gauge (in pattern):

  • 40 stitches x 48 rounds = 10 x 10 cm (4″ x 4″)

You’ll need:

  • 5 double pointed needles size 3,5 mm (US 4)
  • 50 g of DROPS Baby Merino
  • cable needle

Abbreviations:

  • k – knit;
  • p – purl;
  • ssk – slip, slip, knit slipped stitches together;
  • k2tog – knit 2 together;
  • p2tog – purl 2 together;
  • sk2p – slip stitch knit-wise, k 2 together and slip first stitch over;
  • RT – right twist (1 stitch on cable needle, k1 and knit 1 from cable needle;
  • 3/3RC – 3 stitches on cable needle, hold back, knit 3 and then knit 3 from cable needle;
  • 3/3LC – 3 stitches on cable needle, hold in front, knit 3 and then knit 3 from cable needle;
  • 2/2LC – 2 stitches on cable needle, hold in front, knit 2 and then knit 2 from cable needle;
  • 2/2RC – 2 stitches on cable needle, hold back, knit 2 and then knit 2 from cable needle;
  • 1/2RC – 1 stitches on cable needle, hold back, knit 2 and then knit 1 from cable needle;
  • 1/2LC – 1 stitches on cable needle, hold in front, knit 2 and then knit 1 from cable needle;

Note! If you see this kind of thing – p2(p3) – then note that first p2 is for 0 – 3 months and p3 is for 3 – 6 months. You do not knit both.

Cast on 132 (144) stitches.

*k1, p1* to end of the round and 5 rounds total.
