Knit baby hat instructions for beginnerI know, you might be thinking: “When will the interesting and romantic part start?”. Well – soon (knit baby hat with cables on Friday actually).

I’m thinking that maybe first time hat knitters would like to start from this pattern. Why? Because it’s so versatile. I always use this hat pattern to knit for charity. Babies are so different and ribbing is perfect for heads you don’t know the measurements of. It is stretchy and easily adjustable by turning up the lower edge. Plus, it’s very quick to knit. Fantastic gift for your own favorite baby or for baby in need.

So, if you want to practice knitting in rounds and make something of your practice then this hat pattern is for you. Knit two and purl two or knit two together and purl two together – that’s all you need to do.

Now, measurements of the hat:

  • Newborn – circumference 33 – 34 cm (13 – 13,5 in); depth / height: 13 cm (5 in);
  • 1 – 3 months – circumference 33 – 36 cm (13 – 14 in); depth / height: 13 – 15 cm (5 – 6 in);
  • 3 – 6 months – circumference 36 – 43 cm (14 – 17 in); depth / height: 15 – 18 cm (6 – 7 in);
  • 6 – 12 months – circumference 41 – 48 cm (16 – 19 in); depth / height: 17 – 21 cm (6,5 – 8 in);

Abbreviations:

  • k – knit;
  • p – purl;
  • k2tog – knit two together;
  • p2tog – purl two together;

Gauge: 22 stitches x 42 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4″ x 4″)

You’ll need:

  • 40 – 125 g of DROPS Baby Merino or other baby weight yarn
  • 5 double pointed needles size 3,5 mm (US 4)
  • needle for sewing

Note! If you see this kind of thing – 80 (96; 108; 124) then note that first number is for newborn, second number is for 1 – 3 moths, third number is for 3 – 6 months and fourth number is for 6 – 12 months. For example, if pattern instruct you to cast on 80 (96; 108; 124) and you want to knit for 3 – 6 months old baby then you’ll cast on 108 stitches.

Now the pattern:

  • Cast on 80 (96; 108; 124) stitches;
  • Divide between 4 needles;
  • *k2, p2* repeat to end of the round;
  • Repeat this round in total of 65 (75; 80; 80) times;

Decreasing:

  • *k2, p2tog* repeat to end;
  • *k2, p1* repeat to end;
  • *k2tog, p1* repeat to end;
  • *k1, p1* repeat to end;
  • *k2tog* repeat to end;
  • k;
  • *k2tog* repeat to end;

Cut yarn leaving enough for sewing. Thread your needle and pull through all stitches (remove your knitting needles at the same time). Now take your needle to wrong side of the work (through this hole you’ve got) and sew it together (this hole you’ve got). Hide all yarn ends and you’re done.

Pattern itself was quite boring (for me), but you can make it more interesting. You can make this hat with stripes or play with appliques and extras after you’re done.
